Building Resilience: QPI on “Localizing Drug Production for Health Security”

During the interview conducted by QATAR TV, Mr. Mansour Al Nuaimi, CEO of Qatar Pharmaceutical Industries, stated that "Localizing the pharmaceutical industry and achieving self-sufficiency in drug production are considered vital goals to ensure health security and effectively respond to challenges, especially during crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. Heavy reliance on importing medicines makes countries vulnerable to drug shortages in critical times.

Although the COVID-19 pandemic negatively affected the implementation of many projects, including the Qatar Pharmaceutical Industries project, the lessons learned from this crisis have made the importance of such initiatives more apparent. Having local capabilities to produce medicines serves as a "safety valve" in the event of similar crises, enabling the population's needs for medicines to be met without relying on external supplies, which could be disrupted by logistical challenges or trade restrictions.

Such steps toward localization enhance economic independence and support local research and development, allowing countries not only to provide essential medicines but also to develop innovative therapeutic solutions tailored to their unique needs.
